Journal #2
I have used Microsoft Word in my schooling for as long as I can remember. My freshmen year of high school I actually received a certification in it, as well as some other Office 365 programs. I like Microsoft Word because it is easy to use and has always worked for me. I have used Google Docs before but I much prefer Microsoft Word. I don't quite have a reason for liking it more other than familiarity since I have been using it for so long.
The ISTE standard that is most meaningful to me is "Model and nurture creativity and creative expression to communicate ideas, knowledge or connections.". This standard to me means to allow for and encourage creativity in students in all aspects of their learning. I see this standard as important because I feel that in K-12 learning it is important for the student to be allowed creativity because even though they are all being taught the same thing they should learn individual expression. In my K-12 learning experience I think I was allowed a lot of creativity and I think it benefitted me greatly.
I agree with the label of "digital native" for today's youth. To be a "digital native" to me means too have had access to digital technology from a young age allowing for access to a wide range of resources and familiarity with technology early on. I have seen a difference in how some of my past teachers and I use technology. Some of the older ones have not quite understood how to navigate programs like Canvas or Kahoot, and I think that is because my generation is "digital natives" and my teachers have not been. I think this made my learning experience a bit less smooth but overall it wasn't a major problem. I anticipate that by the time I am teaching in a classroom the way I use technology will be a bit more antiquated, and my future students will be better at using it than me.
Hi Hannah, I really enjoyed your post! I think it's great that you received a Microsoft Word certification, I'm sure that would be really helpful in classes like this one. I never had the opportunity to do that, but I have been using the program for many years too. I completely agree that by the time we are teachers, our students will know more about technology than we do. I'm sure that they will have so much to teach us!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't stop your learning new technologies, you will not get behind your students I believe. And this is why continuous professional development is so important.
